About the role

Four Youth Summer Program Counselors will support the FIUTS visiting programs team to execute a month-long camp on the University of Washington campus and in the Seattle area. This position is temporary and includes approximately 250 hours of work. Note: All counselors will be housed in the residence halls of the University of Washington campus and will be required to spend the nights for the full month of camp (June 28-July 26) in the residence halls.

About You

You are confident with groups of young people and interested in education, youth leadership, or nonprofit programs. You have strong written and verbal communication skills in English, but you are patient with people who are building English language skills. You love to have fun, solve problems, and work as part of a cross-cultural team. You have some experience with cross-cultural settings, preferably with Pacific Island/Micronesian cultures.

Duties include:

  • Support preparations for group arrival
  • Participate in airport pick-up and welcome/orientation activities
  • Lead daily games, discussions, and social and cultural activities in collaboration with other staff
  • Ensure safety of all participants during daily activities
  • Monitor participants’ well-being, safety, and overall comfort during the program
  • Provide opportunities and support for cross-cultural communication and learning
  • Answer participants’ questions about language and culture
  • Provide casual mentorship to participants and encourage daily reflection
  • Recognize and mediate interpersonal and group conflicts

The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:

  • Experience working with middle and high school students
  • Demonstrated interest in making connections with international visitors
  • Patience with English language learners and cultural differences
  • Familiarity with Seattle area and use of public transportation
  • Must be over 18 years of age and be eligible for work in the U.S.
  • Available to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, throughout the program dates

Compensation

The person in this role will receive a $4,800 stipend, paid in 2 installments. In addition, counselors will receive all meals, transportation, and activities during program hours.
