Sahar partners with grassroots, locally-based organizations to create educational opportunities and safe learning spaces for girls and women in Afghanistan, empowering and inspiring children and their families to build peaceful, thriving communities. Sahar’s programs include literacy and sewing programs, women’s leadership and health workshops, digital literacy and coding, early marriage prevention, and Men As Partners in Change. Due to the Taliban’s Ban on girls’ and women’s education in Afghanistan, all of our programs are underground.

Sahar is based in Seattle, Washington but all staff members are working remotely for the foreseeable future. 

Job Summary:

Sahar Education is seeking a dynamic and organized U.S.-based Programs Manager to support the development, implementation and monitoring, and evaluation of education programs aimed at empowering girls and women in Afghanistan. The U.S. Programs Manager will be responsible for coordinating program activities, and partnership development. This role requires strong communication and project management skills, as well as a passion for advancing education and gender equality in challenging environments.

Key Responsibilities:

  •  Manage all current programs and teams including; Underground Tech Sheroes, Threads of Hope, Men as Partners in Change, and Secret Scholars, in accordance with the mission and goals of the organization
    • Create and maintain long-term sustainable goals for each program with collaboration from our field partners
    • Research and implement strategies for curriculum development and expansion
    • Develop new programs to support the strategic direction and goals of the organization
  • Responsible for reporting, monitoring, and evaluating all programs
    • Produce accurate and timely reports with updates for each program
    • Assist the Executive Director and Operations and Finance Manager in writing grant applications, grant reports, and program evaluations for grantors
    • Present updates for all programs during weekly staff meetings
    • Work closely with the on-the-ground M&E officer to ensure the accuracy of data and data collection methods
    • Provide Operations and Finance manager with appropriate content for marketing and social media materials 
  • Support field staff’s professional development and training under the guidance of the Executive Director 
    • Assess needs for professional development of local teams
    • Develop and conduct staff development training
  • Prepare and present updates and materials for board meetings, board retreats, and fundraising events
  • Travel for fundraising events 
  • Perform any other duties as requested by the supervisor

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, International Studies, Development, Nonprofit Management, or a related field. A Master’s degree is preferred;
  • Demonstrated interest in women’s studies, girls’ education, and gender equity, mandatory;
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work effectively with diverse teams, mandatory;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, mandatory;
  • Secondary knowledge of Persian and/or Dari is mandatory;
  • Excellent organizational, priority setting, and time management skills, mandatory;
  • Strong understanding of fundraising and marketing strategies, desired;
  • Ability to work well in a small team environment, mandatory

  • Sahar provides 3 weeks of paid vacation (60 hours) and 2 weeks of paid sick leave (40 hours) per year.
