DE Design + Environment

David Oswald is the founder and president of DE Design + Environment Inc., a design and environmental consultancy and technology company based in Vancouver, British Columbia, and Montreal, Quebec, Canada (est. 2005).  David is responsible for the strategic direction of the business and leads all mandates, particularly those focused on climate change.

David and his team follow the company mission to “use design and environmental science to solve problems”.  Their work spans the globe, but they are particularly active in the Caribbean and Latin America where they work with national governments and international organizations by advising them on environmental data acquisition and analysis for MEA and SDG reporting as well as policy issues such as climate change mitigation and adaptation.  They have developed a custom software platform for environmental information management that is used by the governments of Antigua and Barbuda and Saint Lucia to support their United Nations reporting and national decision making with respect to environment and development.  They have worked extensively throughout the Caribbean on food security and agricultural monitoring, reporting and risk assessment using a data-centred approach.

Climate change and biodiversity are two key areas of DE’s mission and the company’s work has been featured at several United Nations COP meetings including UNCBD COP15 (Montreal, 2022), COP10 (Nagoya, 2010) and COP12 (Pyeongchang, 2014), as well as UNCCD COP13 (Ordos, 2017).  DE takes a technological and design-driven approach to these global challenges as exemplified in projects ranging from forest carbon in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, to carbon footprinting for refineries in Canada, to environmental data analysis work for governments throughout Latin America and the Caribbean.

Communication is a strength of DE with their cross-media design expertise being put to work on world expos, science centres, and museums in Germany, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, and other countries.  They harness the power of design thinking and creative communication in all facets of their work.

David is an Associate Professor in the School of Environment and Sustainability at Royal Roads University and in 2016 was elected as a Fellow to the Royal Canadian Geographic Society in recognition of his significant contributions to environmental awareness and understanding in Canada.  He has studied at the University of Waterloo, Royal Roads University (B.Sc. with distinction), McGill University (M.Sc. Physical Geography. McConnell Fellow), and the University of British Columbia (PhD in Environmental Science, Economics, and Design – in progress. UBC Scholar).  David is called upon regularly to present at international conferences and is a TEDx Speaker.
