Voices from the Field: ACT for Congo

Join Global Washington member, ACT for CONGO, for a fireside chat with Fred Bauma, DRC’s most well-known activist; and Judy Anderson, founder and executive director for ACT for Congo. Fred will share his personal story of what it was like growing up in the DRC and his heroic journey that led him to where he is today.

Fred Bauma is one of the leaders of the nonviolent youth organization Lucha. He wants DRC to become a “sentinel of democracy and good governance” and is inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King, Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, “and other great minds that positively changed humanity.” As a community organizer in Goma working on waste management, he found a successful strategy for overcoming this hurdle: combining voluntary community cleaning/sanitation activities with cultural activities. As a national movement leader, he coordinates various initiatives, from prisoner rehabilitation to peace festivals. The work comes at a heavy price: he spent 17 months in jail after attending a youth conference. But living with fellow prisoners from all walks of life gave him insight into his own struggle for unity. Fred was also a 2016 iLEAP fellow and was featured in Humanosphere.

Judy Anderson

Judy Anderson has a variety of experience in identifying and working with leaders of vision and capacity, helping them attain the resources needed to best fulfill that vision. For the past twenty+ years she’s been focusing on community leaders in the Great Lakes Region, Central Africa, and most of that time in DR Congo, based in Goma.  She’s a facilitator, and co-created ACT for Congo in 2013 to continue that work. She grew up in DR Congo, was married in Kinshasa, and has worked primarily in eastern Congo since 1999. “It’s my joy to work with young men and women in Congo who’re smart, connected and committed to a better future for their country!”  She and her husband raised three wonderful children while living on three continents.
