Position Location: This position is remote, but preference of location is Atlanta, GA or Portland, OR and surrounding areas.

Position Summary

Specifically, in your role as the Director of Donor Engagement, you will raise funds for Tearfund’s global work and its work in the US. You will be responsible for building and stewarding a portfolio of new and existing major donors.  You will work with Tearfund USA’s team and with Tearfund’s International Partnerships and Fundraising group in the UK  to secure gifts and ensure proper individual donor stewardship.

Position Responsibilities

Relationship Building

  • Develop individual goals for each contact on your caseload, based on the donor’s history of giving and the organization’s knowledge of that donor’s potential.
  • Devise and execute an engagement plan for each contact to retain and upgrade support. Ability to implement and adapt the plan as necessary throughout the year.
  • Deliver monthly reports which accurately reflects caseload activity and performance as well as market research, including current trends in the sector and be responsible for highlighting significant threats/opportunities.
  • Ensure a comprehensive knowledge of all of Tearfund’s activities, campaigns, policies and corporate information in order to represent Tearfund accurately.
  • Ensure that thorough donor information and correspondence is maintained in Salesforce.
  • Organize US events and overseas trips where appropriate for caseload; participate in relevant networking events.
  • Perform other activities as necessary.

Fundraising

  • Research potential and existing donors to gather relevant information on interests, giving patterns and engagement strategies.
  • Managing records and notes to insure that information is kept secure and confidential, and that all legal and regulatory requirements are met.
  • Work with wider International Fundraising & Partnerships Team, the international programs team, and the Executive Team of Tearfund USA to identify suitable projects, secure appropriate project information, including budgets, and create offers, proposals and asks that will be used to engage supporters.
  • Work with the Executive Leadership Team, Board members and other Tearfund representatives in approaches they make to current or potential donors; help determine best person to approach each donor.
  • Write applications and providing timely appropriate reports for gifts secured.
  • Develop a thorough knowledge of Tearfund and all that we do globally.
  • Perform other donor research and proposal development activities as necessary.

Organization and management

  • Assist the US Executive Team to devise individual income targets for programs, including the general and project restricted income split.
  • Keep an active understanding of the fundraising market, philanthropy trends, and trust/foundation fundraising environment for input into planning.
  • Develop and produce income targets and forecasts for your area of responsibility.
  • Work with the team to develop overall strategy including budgetary requirements, new initiative ROI, and cost-benefit analysis.
  • Attend weekly staff prayers, lead/participate in team prayer and biblical reflection.

Required knowledge, experience, skills, and abilities

  1. Proven track record (five years or more) and progressive responsibility in individual donor fundraising, meeting or exceeding annual goals.
  2. Cross-cultural experience, especially in majority world context.
  3. Grant writing and reporting experience.
  4. Experience managing, interpreting, and using  prospect research.
  5. Event and project management experience.
  6. Excellent written and verbal communication skills; experience with office software, virtual conferencing and meetings, and donor database systems (esp. Salesforce).
  7. Winsome communication skills: Able to establish rapport quickly and draw upon biblical concepts to persuade. Readily provide evidence of Tearfund’s value proposition. Able to convey Tearfund’s credibility, history, and impact with accuracy and enthusiasm.
  8. Ability to travel frequently and work flexible, irregular hours including weekends; valid driver’s license and passport. Expect overseas travel of up to three weeks a year.

Personal Requirements

  1. Committed, mature Christian with an active relationship with Jesus.
  2. Bachelor’s degree or higher.
  3. Knowledge and understanding of relevant audiences, experience working with the audience.
  4. Up to date knowledge of evangelical Christian culture, philanthropy, and trends in the broader church.
  5. Active and meaningful participation (leadership experience preferred) in a local Christian church.
  6. Demonstrated lifestyle of Christ-like humility, compassion and generosity with time, talents and treasure. Infectious enthusiasm and winsome nature. Passionate commitment to Tearfund’s value and beliefs, and to living in accordance with them.
