Lead a team developing great software to support public health systems in low-income countries that ultimately saves lives. This position will manage software development activities for OpenLMIS, an enterprise application automating supply chain operations in low-income countries. It is an example of open source solutions that improve supply chain operations and enable robust data collection and reporting in the most challenging of environments.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties, responsibilities, and activities may change or be assigned at any time.

Lead a team of Software Development Engineers and outsourced development partners;
Conduct and improve software development processes including estimation, agile development, performing code reviews, continuous integration, testing, etc.;
Lead agile development processes to deliver high-quality testable software;
Collaborate with partner software development organizations;
Design, develop, test, and document enterprise class software that works in low infrastructure environments;
Participate along with the Architect and Product Manager in decisions about features, priorities, technical approaches, and user interface design,
Contribute to and help lead Open Source communities;
Recommend changes in features, design, development process and system standards; and
Maintain a familiarity with the needs of end users;

Supervisory Responsibilities:
This position directly supervises up to 3 employees and manages relationships with outsourced development partners. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; monitoring performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; and addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Education & Experience:
Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science or related field;
5+ years professional experience writing high-quality software;
Experience successfully leading a development team;
Experience with Object Oriented Design (abstraction, interfaces, DRY, domain modeling, coupling);
Experience working in global health or development, especially sub-Saharan Africa;
Familiarity with data visualization, analytics, and/or reporting engines (Tableau, JasperSoft, Crystal Reports, R);
Familiarity with devops such as Linux server administration, deploying to the cloud (AWS, Heroku, Docker, Chef) and scripting (Python, sh, Perl);
Familiarity with IDEs (e.g., Netbeans, Eclipse, IntelliJ).
Other Qualifications:
Established cultural competency in partnering with racial, cultural and linguistically diverse groups.
Demonstrated understanding of challenges with working in rural, underserved and low-income context; experience living in and/or working in a low-income country a plus.
Comfortable in a fast-paced technical environment.
Strong communication and collaboration skills;
Expert in at least one modern OO language: Java, C#, Ruby, etc…
Computer Science fundamentals in data structures, algorithm design, problem solving, and complexity analysis;
Knowledge of relational databases and SQL (e.g., PostgreSQL, SQL Server, MySQL);
Fluent in web application design: asynchronous client/server, web-services, RESTful interfaces;
Fluency in spoken and written English required; this position does require creating written documentation;
Ability to travel 25% of the time.
Environment and Physical Demands
VillageReach has no private offices, employees work in a shared, open environment with task and conference rooms accessible to employees for privacy and meetings. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.

This role requires considerable interaction with colleagues in the GMT +2 time zone. While remote candidates will be considered provided there is time zone overlap during core business hours and good internet connectivity, preference will be given to candidates who can work in one of our country offices (Mozambique, Malawi or DRC).
