PATH, in partnership with the Siemens Foundation, is seeking a cohort of two students to join the competitive Siemens Foundation-PATH Fellowship Program as a Product Development Shop Fellow. The program engages science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) students in innovative, hands-on assignments that serve society by accelerating high-impact, low-cost solutions to some of the world’s most pressing health needs.
This valuable learning opportunity is hosted by PATH, a leading global health innovation organization, and supported by the Siemens Foundation. Through targeted investments, the Siemens Foundation advances workforce development and education initiatives in STEM. Its mission is inspired by the culture of innovation, research, and continuous learning that is the hallmark of Siemens’ companies.
Based in PATH’s Seattle, Washington, office, fellows are provided a meaningful research and laboratory experience and exposed to career opportunities in global health. Students will be supported by mentors in both organizations.

PATH’s Global Program: Product Development
Fellowship Opportunity: Product Development Shop Fellow, Devices & Tools (2 openings)
Term: Three-month, full-time assignment, May through August 2018 or June through September 2018 (flexible)
Estimated number of hours per week: 40
Wage: $3,000/month; $9,000 total per fellow
Housing: $1,400/month; $4,200 total per fellow (for those not currently based in Seattle)

The Devices & Tools Global Program at PATH develops, advances, and facilitates commercialization of health technologies for low-resource settings. PATH teams conduct collaborative research and development with universities, manufacturers, and other institutions to develop products that are appropriate and affordable for developing-country use. PATH’s goals in these collaborations are to achieve maximum sustainable public health benefit and to facilitate global technology access. We are currently seeking STEM-focused students in technical or community college programs for two openings in PATH’s onsite Product Development Shop where research and test development work is conducted.
Fellowship goals and learning objectives:
The selected students will work with one or more product development teams under the direction of the Product Development Shop Manager, and join project teams that include research, product development, field validation, and commercialization activities.
- Perform testing of medical devices
- Design, procurement and construction of jigs and test fixtures
- Creation of design documentation (test protocols and reports)
- Procurement of components and supplies
- Design of custom parts using CAD
- Maintenance of a lab notebook
Required skills and experience:
- Enrollment as a current student in a community/technical college in a STEM-related area of study through the entire course of the fellowship period, is preferred; currently enrolled undergraduate students in STEM-related areas of study will also be considered
- Must have legal authorization to work in the United States
- Familiarity with applying the scientific method and design of experiments
- Development and fabrication of test and measurement jigs using basic machine shop methods, tools and machinery
- Ability to analyze and report on scientific data
- Ability to perform data analysis and presentation using Excel, MATLAB or STATA
- Knowledge of basic lab safety and pathogen handling
- Must be able to plan experiments using standardized methods and keep clear, complete documentation of experimental results
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team-based, matrix-structured environment
- Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills (in English) and ability to capture salient points from technical meetings
- Excellent time management skills with the proven ability to meet deadlines
- Keen attention to detail
- Ability to use MS Office Suite, especially Word and Excel
