Director of Corporate Engagement

Landesa is seeking a sharp and entrepreneurial Director of Corporate Engagement that will work with senior staff, field offices, and institutional collaborators to identify corporate engagement opportunities that advance Landesa’s mission, establish strategic partnerships, and develop winning project proposals. Under the guidance of the Chief Program Officer, the Director leads the pursuit of fee-for-service opportunities and private donor or public sector grants to support partnerships. The Director plays a key role in Landesa’s overall proposal development process related to corporate engagement and to responsible investments in land. Landesa is an international nonprofit, founded in 1981, and dedicated to ending global poverty by securing land rights for the world’s poorest. Landesa has worked in 50 countries throughout the world, with a home office in Seattle, WA and field offices in China and India. The organization is widely supported by partners, including NGOs, foundations, donor agencies (USAID, World Bank, etc.), world leaders, educational institutions and individual supporters throughout the world. Landesa is known for its advancement of pro-poor, gender-sensitive land rights reforms that have helped alleviate poverty, reduce hunger, and ease conflict over land for more than 120 million women and men. The Director of Corporate Engagement must share Landesa’s values, be a team player, demonstrate commitment to its mission, and be passionate about those in poverty, gender equality, and believe land rights matter.

Here’s what you’ll be leading, supported by talented Corporate Engagement staff and other Landesa teams:

Representation and Technical Engagement with Corporate Clients and Partners
Create awareness of Landesa’s capabilities and objectives in relation to land based investment
Engage with corporations to improve corporate policies and practices around land-based investments, focused on farmland
Coordinate with corporations as allies in improving government policies, laws, and regulations to strengthen pro-poor, pro-women land rights
Perform research, analysis, and synthesis of topics and issues related to Landesa’s corporate engagement
Lead and develop the Corporate Engagement strategy and business pipeline
Refresh, refine and roll out Landesa’s Corporate Engagement Program strategy
Ensure opportunity identification and communications with prospective clients, partners, and donors are coordinated and support current Landesa strategies and priorities
Verify technical and financial proposals are sound and appropriately address all procurement and Landesa standard requirements ensuring quality client-service agreements, partnership and project proposals
Implementation Management
Ensure quality project management for all projects managed by the CE team including conformance with internal and external requirements related to budgeting, human resource allocation and work planning, cost monitoring and control, monitoring travel schedules, and product preparation and delivery
Confirm that all Corporate Engagement activities are gender-responsive
Actively engage Landesa’s learning and results monitoring efforts
Team Development
Promote and encourage a work environment and culture that values teamwork, innovation, cooperation, open communication, and respect
Foster integrated team building across departments
Collaborate with the CPO, project managers, and program directors to identify high potential candidates for key project positions
Here’s what will support your success:

A deep commitment and passion for Landesa’s mission of a better, safer future for the world’s poorest people through secure access to land
An advanced degree in law, social sciences, international development, economics, or related
A minimum of fifteen (15) years of relevant international development work experience with demonstrated technical knowledge of policy and practical solutions that support secure land rights, including (5+ years) in team leadership and management
High-level corporate social responsibility, human rights, or sustainability expertise with prior exposure to land rights issues within these spheres
An understanding of women’s access and secure rights to land
Strong depth and breadth of field work experience
Strong research, analysis, synthesis, reasoning, and writing abilities with skills in quantitative analysis are highly beneficial
Prior work experience with USAID, DFID, the World Bank, and/or other multi/bi-lateral donor is highly beneficial
Preferred qualities and experience:

1)A results-driven entrepreneur with proven nimbleness and vision in start-up environments

2)Experience in at least one of the three areas listed below (these are listed in order of priority to this position):

a)Responsible private sector investment related to land or natural resources with working knowledge of land governance

b)Corporate social responsibility with emphasis on human rights or exposure to land rights

c)Land governance with specific understanding of best practice standards, land access,

3)Strong management skills with experience in staff and partner capacity development, human resource and financial management, and coaching staff through hands-on technical guidance and effective collaboration in a matrixed environment

4)Proven ability to lead by example, whereby one is receptive to input from others and will respect, empower, and energize the entire organization, providing periodic strategic updates and managing risks

5)Strong communication skills with ability to appropriately message information both internally and externally and represent Landesa with clients, building advocacy and collaboration
