Organization Description

Songea’s Kids vision is: “The people of Songea, Tanzania, will meet basic, health, and educational needs of their children.” Their mission is: “Songea’s Kids collaborates with Tanzanian partners to support orphans and other vulnerable children (OVC), and build self-sustaining infrastructure in Mshangano Village.” Working with their Tanzania partner NGO Jirani Mwema, they care for 62 OVC in the poor, under-served Mshanagano Ward of Songea, providing funding for food, health care, and education. The two organizations are collaborating to build Hope Village, a self-sustaining complex containing a Children’s home for 160 OVC, health clinic, nursery/pre-primary school and vocational school to be built in 4 phases.

Example Project

In collaboration with Jirani Mwema, Mshangano Village leaders, Songea officials, Sundberg Architectural Initiatives, and Engineers Without Borders--Puget Sound Professional Chapter, and organizations in Germany Songea's Kids is building Hope Village (Kijiji cha Matumaini). For the first time the Village will have residential children's homes for OVC not thriving in home-based care, a nursery/pre-primary school, a health clinic and a vocational school, and a deep solar-powered well. The goal is for the Village to be self-sustaining through income-producing intitatives. Jirani Mwema and Songea's Kids are working to improve the home-based care system with improved monitoring of the children, and training/counseling for the caregivers and the OVC. A hand puump well producing clean water for Mshangano Village was completed in 2010. Construction of an assembly hall and offices in Hope Village is underway in 2011.
